WordCamp Europe opens Call for Volunteers

After very successful WordCamp Europe this year in Vienna, Austria, we’re preparing the next one in Paris, France, happening from 15–17 June 2017. The one in Vienna was the largest WordCamp in the world welcoming almost 2000 attendees, that came from 68 countries – just amazing.

Everything mentioned wouldn’t be possible without volunteers. Last year 160 people volunteered to make WordCamp Europe as accessible to everyone as possible, because – every person matters. As WordCamp Europe 2017 in Paris will be even bigger, we will need a giant volunteer team for 2017. Our Call for Volunteers opened yesterday and we need your help.

Being a volunteer is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. It gives you the opportunity to meet and speak with attendees from all over the world, help out with speakers and much more. And volunteering is important because without you, the volunteers, WordCamp Europe couldn’t be as accessible as it is. As with WordPress who democratized publishing, allowing everyone to publish within minutes, WordCamps are the way we meet people and learn new things.

Become a volunteer at WordCamp Europe 2017!

WordCamp Orlando 2016 is Cancelled Due to Hurricane Matthew

On October 5th, WordCamp Orlando’s 2016 venue was issued to shut down by officials at The University of Central Florida due to the threat of Hurricane Matthew. The venue, The UCF Rosen Campus, will remain closed throughout the planned duration of our camp, therefore taking the decision to cancel out of the organizer’s hands.

The WCORL team is offering full refunds to all ticket holders up through Friday, October 14th. More information on the refunds can be found on their blog.

The team is planning on rescheduling the camp activities for another date, hopefully later this year. If that happens, all ticket holders will be notified.

Sponsors of WCORL have the option of leaving their sponsorship as-is and becoming a default sponsor of the rescheduled event, or requesting a refund from WordCamp Central. Please contact WordCamp Central for information on sponsorship refunds.

Two days of programming

We wouldn’t be doing the burgeoning Nashville tech scene justice if we weren’t growing right alongside it! Camps of years’ past have happened all in one day, but this year we’re expanding to two. The first day will be familiar to attendees from previous years – 8 hours of sessions that fall into three tracks targeted at different types of users, followed by the always-popular after party. The second day will be a contributor day where attendees can learn how to contribute to WordPress in a variety of ways from code to community organizing, supplemented with small classes that will allow attendees to go in-depth on three different topics.

All attendees are invited to attend any session, regardless of skill level, and can switch back and forth between tracks at any time.

A brand new location

As much as we loved Nashville School of Law, we wanted to be closer to the heart of the city and closer to the community that sustains us. This year we’ll be at redpepper & deavor.

redpepper & deavor are conveniently located to all that Germantown – and the city at large – has to offer.

For those coming from out of town, Germantown is a must-visit. For locals, there’s no other area that is so close to the city center while also feeling like home. Germantown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979 and was Nashville’s first suburb. It is one of Nashville’s most architecturally heterogeneous neighborhoods, containing a significant concentration of Victorian building styles and has been designated as a city Arboretum by the Nashville Tree Foundation.

Nearby points of interest include: The Nashville Farmers’ Market, home to up to 100 farmers and artisans, 16 restaurants and shops, and more than 50 merchants selling clothes, jewelry, home goods, and more; Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, where you can explore Tennessee via a 200-foot granite map of the state, a walkway featuring the 95 counties, 31 fountains representing the major rivers of Tennessee and an extraordinary wall depicting the history of the state; restaurants including Germantown Café, Monell’s, Mad Platter Restaurant, City House, Rolf and Daughters, Butchertown Hall, and The Red Bicycle Coffee and Crepes; and the new First Tennessee Park, the new home to the Nashville Sounds, AAA affiliate to the Oakland A’s.

So much excitement!

Nashville is growing by leaps and bounds, and so is the WordPress community. Right now, there are over 1400 members of our local MeetUp group, and right now, community members are working to schedule MeetUp sessions in neighboring cities like Franklin, Mt. Juliet and Hendersonville. The enthusiasm and passion for WordPress is growing, and this year’s camp is your only opportunity to connect with so many ‘Pressers in one place at the same time.

This year’s WordCamp will bring together more local WordPress fans than ever before – don’t miss out!

Rhode Island English

  • International Friendship Day is celebrated in August.
  • Our WordCamp friends in Belfast are holding their first WordCamp the same weekend Rhode Island is holding its fifth annual WordCamp!
  • We both speak English, but each with our own spin on it.

So to honor (or should I say honour) our international friends, during this month of International Friendship Day, here’s a guide to Rhode Island English.
Are you watching TV (or should I say “the telly”) and want to change the channel right from where you are sitting?  Just use the “clicker.”  Why do that?  Because it’s “wicked” easy.  (Also pronounced wikkit.)
If our Irish friends come to the Ocean State and want a cold ice cream drink, do not order a “milk shake.”  In RI a milk shake is milk shaken with syrup.  If you’d like ice cream in it, ask for a “cabinet” (yes, like the furniture!) or a frappe (pronounced “frap”).
Would you like a healthier cold drink?  Water, perhaps?  You get that from the “bubbler” (pronounced bubbla.)
You see, in RI we add Rs where there are none, and to make up for those extras we take away Rs where there should be some.  So for instance, we have a lot of “hot.”  You know, the organ which pumps blood and holds love.  However, if you have a wonderful concept to explain, let everyone know about your “idear.”
It’s mealtime, and you’d like to invite someone to join you, just ask “jeet?”  (did you eat?)  If that person has not yet, they might respond “no joo?” (no, did you?)
Rhode Island has the nickname “The Ocean State.”  And yes, we are the smallest state in the USA.  We do not have an official animal, but we do have an official bird: The Rhode Island Red (chicken).  First bred right here.  The official state fish (would I kid you?) is the Striped Bass, adopted by the state’s General Assembly in July of 2000.
The state drink is coffee milk, as in milk with coffee flavored syrup stirred in.  (Pul-eez, chocolate milk is so passé.)
Our state shell is the quahaug (pronounced co-hog).  What’s that you say?  You think I left out a word?  You think our official state shellfish is the quahaug?  No, my friend, you under-estimate we Rhode Islanders.  It is the shell of the shellfish which is official.  We have an official state shell.  And I strongly suspect we are the only state in the Union with that distinction!
So we wish our WordCamp siblings in Belfast a successful first WordCamp and look forward to the day you can come and visit us!  We’ll have a wikkit good time!

WordCamp RI will be held September 30 and October 1 at the New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich.
